What is PCOS / PCOD?

Polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS is a hormonal disbalance in women who are of  age. In this condition, the ovaries of the woman may become enlarged and they may develop numerous harmless fluid filled sacs (follicles). These follicles are underdeveloped sacs which are meant for developing eggs - when you have PCOS, these follicles fail to release the matured eggs.

 

What is PCOS / PCOD?

 

PCOD Causes :

In PCOD, many small sacs fill up with fluid inside the ovaries. Each of these contains an immature egg that never triggers ovulation. The absence of ovulation leads to a hormonal imbalance with a high release of male. Research hasn’t pointed out the exact reasons why PCOD problems happen. However, certain factors contribute to it. They are:

1. Genetic makeup
2. Insulin Resistance
3. Obesity
4. High levels of inflammation
5. Excess insulin
6. Excess androgen

Common symptoms of PCOS :

  1. Irregular periods: Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged , or they may not have periods at all.
  2. Excess androgen levels: PCOS can cause the ovaries to high levels of androgens, which can lead to symptoms such as acne, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), and male-pattern baldness.

  3. Polycystic ovaries: Women with PCOS may have enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges.

  4. Insulin resistance: PCOS can cause insulin resistance, which can lead to weight gain and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

  5. Difficulty getting PCOS can make it harder for women to conceive due to irregular ovulation or the lack of ovulation.

  6. Weight gain: Women with PCOS may have difficulty losing weight and may gain weight easily.

  7. Mood changes: Some women with PCOS may experience mood swings, anxiety, or depression.
